First Day School

First Day School is what other churches often call “Sunday School”. Children are provided with a grounding in Quaker ideas and practices, including worship and the process of care of the earth, social justice, and living with integrity. It is designed to help them understand that religion and everyday life are interconnected.

At Fifteenth Street, First Day School takes place every Sunday, on the second floor during the 11:00 meeting, for children five and above. They are invited to join the silent worship in the main hall during the last ten minutes of the hour.

For children younger than five, there is play-based childcare in the same room.

In other words: All children are welcome!

First Day School Programming 2024-2025

During the school year (September through June) the Meeting’s First Day School teachers lead Quaker-themed lessons. For the 2024-45 school year, First Day School lessons will explore the topics of Quaker activism and celebrating the natural world. In addition to the planned lessons’ themes, First Day School has several traditions such as:

  • A welcome back breakfast in September
  • Pumpkin decorating in October
  • Craft making for raising money to purchase Christmas gifts for the Meeting’s Shelter’s guests
  • A Christmas pageant
  • Easter egg decorating
  • An Easter egg hunt

Young Adult Friends (YAF)

Young Adult Friends (YAF) includes individuals typically aged 18 to 35. These Friends often engage in discussions and activities that address their specific spiritual, social, and community needs, while also participating in the broader life of the meeting and the Society.

The New York Yearly Meeting maintains a rolling list of events and opportunities for Young Adult Friends. There is also an email newsletter; email bethk@nyym.org to subscribe.
